Place of memory

The street of Guiche was recently renamed by the city hall of Pau. What is it called now?

On October 27, 2018 the Rue de Guiche changed its name to Rue des Républicains Espagnols en Béarn.

Starting in 1936, Pau welcomed many Spanish Republican refugees who were fleeing their country during or after the Franco coup and the civil war. Many Spaniards settled and lived in the Hédas neighborhood, contributing over the years to the development of Pau.

The rue de Guiche was selected among the streets of the neighborhood to pay tribute to the Spanish refugees, while many of their descendants still live in Pau.
